EARTH, Laniakea Supercluster—When an American fighter jet was downed in Iran in early April, it left scattered, smoldering F-15 parts littered across the Iranian desert 50 miles outside of Isfahan. The cause of the crash is unknown. Yet, in the subsequent debriefing, the jet’s pilot claimed he saw a swarm of Iranian drones moving in a jellyfish formation.

“A minefield of drones,” a secondary source eerily described, according to the CNN exclusive that broke the story. “Real alien sh*t.”

U.S. intelligence officials are divided over the matter, and many doubt the pilot’s statement. After all, he was concussed during the crash, and it was his second downing of the war, after a friendly-fire incident involving Kuwaiti forces earlier in the conflict. So, is this ‘jellyfish’ drone really secret, advanced Iranian military tech? Or just hallucinations thanks to desert heat and head trauma?

Or something else entirely?

The secondary source commented on the pilot’s report, saying there were "multiple drones interconnected and moving as one with smaller drones below the bigger drones like legs.”

Though this sounds like the technology of fictional dystopias and Marvel movies, it's indeed very real. The technical term that describes this drone capability is a ‘one-to-many meshed network’. Broadly speaking, this system is used to operate multiple drones simultaneously under the control of one operator.

According to CNN, two anonymous sources say reports have been flooding into U.S. intelligence agencies about Iran's drone development, and their alleged support from China and Russia. The fact that both nations possess meshed network drone capabilities—coupled with the fact that Iran has used attack drones against the U.S. and Israel amidst the ongoing conflict—adds credibility to those reports. Still, it’s just one theory (and a very Red, White and Blue one at that).

Another theory has emerged, though, and it revolves around the pilot’s secure grip on the label ‘jellyfish’. That’s a word that has some strange history in this world, particularly in relation to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs, also known as UFOs).

In 2024, investigative journalists George Knapp and Jeremy Corbell released a video of what’s become known as the jellyfish UAP. The leaked infrared U.S. military footage was captured on an American installation in Iraq circa 2017. The shocking footage shows a jellyfish-shaped object seemingly moving with purpose across the military base without being noticed by various service members below. In September 2025, the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) concluded that the 2017 leaked footage was just a cluster of balloons.

While the government may have publicly dismissed that specific footage, it’s still been taking UAPs seriously. A new federal UAP initiative, called PURSUE, has released numerous declassified videos and files that at least show past attempts to catalog, understand, and define such phenomena.

For example, the PURSUE file 18_100754, directed to a senior Air Force commander circa 1947, indicates some common characteristics of UAPs. These include: a metallic or light-reflecting exterior, a lack of trail, strange formations of multiple objects in flight at an abnormally high speed, among others. Below that are a few considerations, but the most pertinent is the possibility of a foreign nation having some sort of technology or nuclear propulsion that the U.S. is unfamiliar with. The 2017 video footage of the ‘jellyfish’ was captured around 600 miles west of Isfahan, the region where the pilot crashed.

The so-called Jellyfish UAPs have also been identified by the controversial private initiative Skywatcher, which publicly claimed to have created a taxonomy of nine UAP types. One form they cataloged was the Jellyfish, defining it as having a seeking head motion and trailing tentacles which, combined, equate to a length somewhere in between 5 and 7 meters.

While Skywatcher’s description sounds mighty similar to the pilot’s, it’s far from any sort of proof that the drones were anything more than advanced technology. But with the hyperbolic quotes presented by CNN (e.g., ‘Real alien sh*t’), it certainly raised questions for the deeper corners of UFO Reddit.
