The Alderney Sighting
Two airline pilots on separate planes watched brilliant yellow shapes over the Channel Islands for 15 minutes in 2007. A university study took it seriously and found no answer.

01Summary
On April 23, 2007, Captain Ray Bowyer, flying an Aurigny Air Services Trislander from Southampton toward Alderney, observed a brilliant sustained yellow light ahead, resolving through binoculars into a sharply defined, elongated shape; a second similar object appeared behind it. The sighting lasted about 15 minutes, passengers saw the objects, and a pilot on a separate Blue Islands aircraft reported a matching object from a different bearing. Jersey radar recorded unconfirmed traces.
02What Happened
Bowyer described the objects as thin, flattened ellipses of intense light with a dark band, estimating (with range uncertainty he acknowledged) lengths up to a mile if as distant as the geometry suggested. He reported the sighting officially, unusual in commercial aviation, and later spoke at a 2007 National Press Club event on pilot reports.
03The Evidence
Two independent professional crews, passenger corroboration, and partial radar returns, assembled in an extensive study by David Clarke and physicist Paul Fuller for a Channel Islands review, with meteorological reconstruction.
04Official Response
The UK and Jersey authorities logged the reports; no explanation was issued. The academic study, published in 2008, examined atmospheric possibilities and left the case unexplained while flagging candidate mechanisms.
05Skepticism
The leading mundane hypothesis from the study's own exploration: unusual refraction of sunlight through atmospheric layers, possibly involving reflections from greenhouse arrays on Guernsey, creating mirage-like luminous sheets, a mechanism requiring rare ducting conditions plausibly present that day. Skeptics favor it as fitting the objects' stationary brilliance; Bowyer found it inadequate for the objects' defined structure and the second aircraft's geometry. The case remains aviation's best-documented recent daylight report from British airspace.
