The Broad Haven School Sighting

On February 4, 1977, a group of pupils at Broad Haven Primary School in Pembrokeshire, Wales reported seeing a silver, cigar-shaped craft with a dome, and in some accounts a figure, in fields beside their playground. The headmaster, skeptical, separated 14 boys and had them draw what they saw; the drawings matched closely. The case ignited a year-long west Wales flap dubbed the Dyfed Triangle.

The children's reports were followed within weeks by others: school staff reported a similar object, and at nearby Ripperston Farm, the Coombs family reported repeated phenomena, most famously a seven-foot figure in a silvery suit with a blank face at their window, along with vehicle interference and anomalous lights. National media descended, and the region logged dozens of reports through 1977.

The same-day drawings (preserved and periodically exhibited), multi-witness testimony, and the contemporaneous press and BBC coverage. The UK Ministry of Defence's file, later released, records inquiries and no identified defense concern.

The MoD made informal checks (including whether local oil refinery activity or military exercises explained reports) and closed its file without explanation.

Years later, a hotel manager and others suggested pranksters: a local businessman reportedly owned a silver fire-protection suit, and admissions of suit-wearing japes circulated, offering a candidate for the giant. Skeptics add schoolyard contagion for the children's sighting, seeded by the era's Star Wars-adjacent saucer saturation, plus the refinery's flare stacks. Witnesses, including the now-adult pupils interviewed on anniversaries, have largely stood by the reports, and no prankster explanation covers the initial daylight object. The case remains Wales's Westall: drawings against decades.
