Interpretations split immediately: either ice particles and debris near the orbiter, disturbed by a reaction-control thruster firing (the flash), with the "streak" another particle, or distant objects executing intelligent evasion from a ground- or space-based weapon test, the reading advanced by proponents of Star Wars-era conspiracy.
03The Evidence
The downlinked video, the mission's thruster-firing records, and orbital geometry, all public, which is why the case became a workable physics argument rather than a testimony fight.
04Official Response
NASA's explanation: orbiter-generated debris and ice illuminated at sunrise, with the L5 thruster firing at the flash moment, its plume accelerating nearby particles, an environment every shuttle mission documented.
05Skepticism
Physicist Jack Kasher published analyses arguing the motions were inconsistent with thruster-blown ice, proposing distant powered objects; plasma physicist and skeptics including James Oberg answered point by point, showing the timing matches the thruster record and the motions fit particles in the plume, with parallax making near ice look like far craft. Oberg's shuttle-environment documentation (shedding ice constantly) persuaded most analysts. The exchange remains a model of the field's best-case argument: shared data, published physics, and a resolution most, though not all, accept.
