The Antônio Vilas-Boas Case

Antônio Vilas-Boas, a 23-year-old farmer near São Francisco de Sales, Brazil, reported that on the night of October 16, 1957, an egg-shaped craft landed beside his tractor, small suited beings dragged him aboard, and after an examination he was left with a pale, humanlike woman with whom he had intercourse, after which she pointed at her belly and skyward. It is the first detailed abduction account of the modern era, recorded years before the Betty and Barney Hill case became public.

Vilas-Boas was plowing at night to avoid heat when, by his account, the craft descended on three legs. His tractor engine died. Four beings in tight grey suits and helmets took him inside, stripped him, spread a liquid over his skin, took blood samples from his chin, and left him in a room where the woman appeared. He estimated the entire event at just over four hours and described the beings' speech as barking or yelping sounds. He reported nausea and weakness afterward, and skin lesions.

Vilas-Boas told his story in February 1958 to journalist João Martins and physician Olavo Fontes, who examined him and documented lesions and symptoms he read as consistent with radiation exposure. The account circulated among researchers for years before English publication in the mid-1960s. Vilas-Boas became a lawyer, avoided publicity, and affirmed the account until his death in 1991, including in a rare 1978 television appearance.

Proponents emphasize the pre-cultural timing: the account, with its clinical procedure and reproductive theme, was recorded before abduction narratives existed publicly, then the template appeared worldwide. That inversion, template before culture, is the case's enduring argument.
