The Ramey Memo

The Ramey memo is a sheet of paper visible in Brigadier General Roger Ramey's hand in J. Bond Johnson's July 8, 1947 photographs at Fort Worth Army Air Field, taken as Ramey posed with the "weather balloon" debris that closed the Roswell story. Because the paper faces the camera, partially legible, it is ufology's most tantalizing incidental document: a possible contemporaneous message about what was actually recovered.

The photographs are authentic and archived (the University of Texas at Arlington holds the negatives). The memo exists only as those few hundred blurred pixels; the original paper was never preserved or identified.

Enhancement attempts since the 1990s, from darkroom blowups to modern computational imaging, have produced contested readings. Pro-UFO researchers report phrases like "the victims of the wreck" and "in the 'disc'"; skeptics and neutral analysts read the same regions as ordinary operational language about weather balloons and shipment, or as unresolvable. A crowdsourced RAF/academic-adjacent effort and repeated scanning projects (including high-resolution digitization in the 2010s-2020s) have not produced consensus; readings correlate suspiciously well with readers' expectations.

The photograph is authentic; the text is unestablished. No proposed reading meets evidentiary standards, a conclusion even careful pro-Roswell researchers (Kevin Randle among them) have accepted in print.

If "victims of the wreck" were ever established, the memo would upend the Roswell record from inside the debunking photo itself, which is why the pixels keep being interrogated. As is, the memo is the field's Rorschach document: a genuine artifact whose information content sits below the noise floor, teaching the limits of enhancement and the psychology of reading.

As above; the skeptical position is simply that the resolution is insufficient and the readings are projection. Periodic claims of decisive new reads have not survived independent review.
