Martians

No alien has been redrawn as often as the Martian. The figure has been, in turn, a dying world's canal engineer, a tentacled brain in a war machine, the pulps' bug-eyed green man, a telepathic elder, and a vanished ghost implied by ruins. The Martian functions as a screen: whatever an era fears or hopes about a rival intelligence gets painted onto the nearest plausible world.

The scientific seed was Giovanni Schiaparelli's 1877 report of Martian "canali" (channels), which Percival Lowell built into a civilization across his trilogy from Mars (1895) to Mars as the Abode of Life (1908): engineers moving polar water across a dying planet. H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds (1898) weaponized the idea, and Orson Welles's October 30, 1938 radio adaptation produced documented public alarm, the template case for media-driven panic. Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles (1950) made the Martians elegiac. Early contactees and mediums (Hélène Smith's "Martian language" in the 1890s) claimed contact throughout.

Martians populated the 1896-97 airship tales (the Aurora "pilot"), early contactee accounts, and decades of sightings lore before spacecraft closed the surface. The 1976 Viking "Face on Mars" at Cydonia revived habitation claims until higher-resolution imaging resolved it as a mesa.

"Little green men" entered the language as the generic alien, and Mars remains fiction's default other world. The Martian is the only entry in this guide whose existence remains a live mainstream scientific question, in microbial form: the 1996 Allan Hills 84001 meteorite debate and today's rover astrobiology keep ancient Martian life a respectable hypothesis.

The observational story is complete: the canals were an optical illusion (mapped human eye-strain, as later analysis showed), Cydonia was lighting and resolution, and every lander has found a sterile-seeming surface. Historians read the Martian as the clearest case of culture generating aliens from ambiguous data. The astrobiological question, ancient or subsurface microbial life, is real science and entirely separate from the civilization lore.
