01What It Is
The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) is the world's largest civilian UFO investigation organization, founded in 1969. It operates a trained volunteer field-investigator program, state and national chapters, an annual symposium, and a public case management system that logs hundreds of sighting reports monthly.
02Origins
03What It Does
MUFON trains investigators through a certification manual and exam, dispatches them to interview witnesses and document cases, and grades outcomes in its database, which is publicly searchable. It publishes the MUFON UFO Journal, holds an annual symposium, and has occasionally partnered at scale, most notably providing case flow to Bigelow's BAASS during the AAWSAP era (2009-2010), a paid arrangement that split the membership. Its Special Assignment Team handles high-priority cases.
04Key People
Founder Walt Andrus led for decades; subsequent directors include John Schuessler (of Cash-Landrum fame), Jan Harzan, and David MacDonald. Many prominent researchers passed through its ranks.
05Current Status
Active, with thousands of members internationally and a steady case intake that spikes during flaps such as the 2024-2025 drone wave.
06Controversy
MUFON's history includes real turbulence: the Bigelow deal's confidentiality terms angered members; director Jan Harzan resigned in 2020 after an arrest in an online sting (he later pleaded to related charges); and a former state director's extremist statements forced expulsions and reforms. Skeptics fault variable investigator quality and a database heavy with lights-in-the-sky reports. Defenders note MUFON remains the only standing body that will actually send a trained person to a witness's door, and that AARO-era researchers still mine its data.
