Leslie Kean

Leslie Kean is an independent investigative journalist and arguably the most consequential reporter in modern ufology. She co-wrote the December 2017 New York Times story revealing the Pentagon's AATIP program and co-broke the June 2023 David Grusch story in The Debrief.

Kean began in public radio and freelance investigative work. A 1999 French report by retired generals, the COMETA report, pulled her onto the subject; her 2000 Boston Globe piece on it began two decades of specialized reporting. She co-founded the Coalition for Freedom of Information, pressing NASA for records on the 1965 Kecksburg case.

Her 2010 bestseller UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go On the Record assembled firsthand accounts from senior military and aviation figures across ten countries, a sourcing standard that made the subject respectable to editors. With Ralph Blumenthal and Helene Cooper she broke the AATIP story and the existence of the Navy videos in The New York Times, followed by the 2019 pilot-sightings story. In 2023, when mainstream outlets hesitated, she and Blumenthal published the Grusch claims in The Debrief after his clearance review. She has also written seriously on consciousness and survival research, which critics and admirers both note.

Kean's own claims are restrained: the phenomenon is unexplained, official secrecy is real, and the evidence merits investigation. Her contribution is the modern record itself: without her byline the AATIP and Grusch stories may not exist in their influential form.

Skeptics have criticized her sympathetic framing and her promotion of the 2011 "Chilean helicopter video" (later identified as a distant aircraft) as a lapse. Her openness to fringe-adjacent research draws fire. Defenders point to her documented care with witnesses and the stories' durability.

Kean continues reporting on the disclosure fight, including PURSUE-era records politics, and is often described as the beat's most trusted byline among insiders.
