Nick Pope

Nick Pope is a former UK Ministry of Defence civil servant who administered the ministry's UFO desk (Secretariat (Air Staff) 2a) from 1991 to 1994 and has since become the English-speaking media's go-to former official on all things UFO, appearing across news networks and documentaries for three decades.

Pope joined the MoD in 1985 and served in various posts over 21 years. The UFO desk was one assignment among several; he has said he began it as a skeptic and left persuaded that a small residue of cases defied explanation and deserved better investigation.

At the desk he handled public reports and correspondence, reinvestigated the Rendlesham file, and reviewed the 1993 "Cosford incident" wave, which he has described as his tipping point: multiple military witnesses and a duty officer's report of a craft over two air bases. After leaving, he wrote Open Skies, Closed Minds (1996) and further books, commented through the 2008-2013 release of the UK's UFO files, and became a fixture of Ancient Aliens-era television and the modern UAP news cycle, generally urging serious inquiry while debunking weak cases.

Pope claims no certainty about origins; his standing position is that roughly five percent of reports resist explanation and that governments under-investigated for stigma reasons. His contribution is translational: he explains bureaucratic reality to believers and the phenomenon's residue to institutions.

Critics, including some former MoD colleagues quoted in the released files era, have argued the desk was a minor correspondence job and that "Britain's real-life Fox Mulder" branding overstates it; skeptics note his media ubiquity rewards mystery. Pope acknowledges the desk's modest rank while standing by the casework. Documented facts support both the modest job description and his genuine custody of the files in his years.
