Paul Hellyer

Paul Hellyer (1923-2021) was Canada's minister of national defence from 1963 to 1967, the unifier of Canada's armed forces, and later the most senior Western former official to publicly declare belief in extraterrestrial visitation and government cover-up.

A long-serving parliamentarian and cabinet heavyweight, Hellyer nearly won the Liberal leadership in 1968 and spent later decades on monetary-reform advocacy before his 2005 conversion, prompted, he said, by reading Philip Corso's The Day After Roswell and watching Peter Jennings's UFO special.

From a 2005 Toronto speech onward, Hellyer said flatly that UFOs are as real as the airplanes flying overhead. He testified at the 2013 Citizen Hearing on Disclosure in Washington, gave global interviews, and in a famous 2014 RT appearance described multiple species visiting Earth, including "Tall Whites" working with the U.S. Air Force, sourcing such details to literature like Charles Hall's books rather than to his ministerial knowledge. He advocated for official disclosure and warned against weaponizing space.

Hellyer's contribution is rank: a G7 nation's former defence minister saying the words gave every subsequent documentary its establishment quote. He was consistent that his beliefs came from post-office reading and witnesses he trusted, not from classified briefings, a candor both sides note.

Skeptics observed that a credential is not evidence, and that Hellyer's specifics (species counts, the Tall Whites) traced to uncorroborated books, which Iranian state media then amplified into a fake "Snowden documents" story, a case study in credential laundering. Canadian commentators ranged from affectionate to embarrassed. Believers countered that a man of his stature had nothing to gain, which was, at minimum, true.

Hellyer died in 2021 at 98. His speeches remain the disclosure movement's favorite proof that seniority and belief can coexist, and his sourcing remains the skeptics' favorite reply.
