Cydonians

The Cydonian is reconstructed from architecture, not encounter: a tall, possibly long-skulled humanoid of a lost Martian civilization, imagined from the "Face on Mars," a mile-wide mesa in the planet's Cydonia region. In the lore, their world died when Mars lost its atmosphere, and survivors may have fled to Earth in prehistory, seeding Egyptian and Mesoamerican cultures.

Viking 1 photographed the mesa on July 25, 1976; its light and shadow suggested a humanoid face, which NASA's own caption noted in passing. Engineers Vincent DiPietro and Gregory Molenaar began the anomalist reinterpretation in 1982, and Richard Hoagland's The Monuments of Mars (1987) was the definitive treatment, mapping alleged geometric relationships among Cydonia's features and to terrestrial monuments.

The Face became one of the century's most recognizable images, driving books, films (Mission to Mars, 2000), and a genuine public demand that NASA re-image the region, an early case of anomaly culture steering a space agency's public relations.

Mars Global Surveyor's 1998 and 2001 images, at vastly higher resolution and different lighting, resolved the Face into an ordinary weathered massif, and the mainstream case ended there; psychologists file the episode under pareidolia, the mind's face-finding reflex, plus low-resolution shadow. Hoagland's geometry was shown to be selection from abundant natural features. The lore continued regardless through writers like Graham Hancock, on the argument that erosion could hide artifice. The Cydonian remains the cleanest teaching case of an alien civilization built from image artifacts.
