The remote blue elders of the outer system, drawn with sea-god iconography and antifreeze biology. A minor archetype kept alive by completists and one Voyager flyby.

01The Archetype
Neptunians are imagined deep blue, oceanic, and remote: drawn in the pulp tradition with sea-god iconography (broad-shouldered, sometimes trident-bearing) or foregrounded for cold-adaptation, with antifreeze biochemistry and patience calibrated to a 165-year orbit. They are cast as aloof from inner-system politics, the taxonomy's furthest and quietest seat.
02Origins in Lore
The Neptunian is a minor archetype assembled from pulp fiction's planetary-romance era and the completist impulse of contactee councils and channeled catalogs, which list a Neptune delegation with little content. Voyager 2's August 1989 flyby, revealing the vivid blue methane atmosphere and the Great Dark Spot, briefly refreshed the imagery.

04Cultural Footprint
Slight: the Neptunian survives in vintage fiction, astrological-esoteric crossover (Neptune as the planet of dream and dissolution), and taxonomy-completing lists.
05The Skeptical View
Neptune is a frigid ice giant without a surface, and no claim requiring rebuttal has ever attached to it. The entry exists for coverage: readers meeting a "Neptunian" in the literature can locate its provenance (fiction and list-filling) and its evidential content (none). In a guide, knowing that a being is a placeholder is itself the fact worth having.
