Art Bell

Art Bell (1945-2018) was the creator and host of Coast to Coast AM, the overnight talk-radio institution that, from the late 1980s through the 1990s, made UFOs, conspiracies, and high strangeness a mass listening experience, at its peak reaching roughly ten million weekly listeners on hundreds of stations.

A licensed broadcast engineer and rock DJ, Bell built the show from KDWN in Las Vegas, broadcasting from his home studio in Pahrump, Nevada, beside the ham radio rig that was its aesthetic soul.

Bell's open-line format gave the culture its folklore delivery system: the 1997 "Area 51 caller" panic broadcast, Mel's Hole, shadow people, and endless witness calls. He platformed the field's figures (George Knapp guest-hosted; Linda Moulton Howe reported regularly) and its worst hours: the 1997 Hale-Bopp "companion object" claims aired on his show were later cited in coverage of the Heaven's Gate suicides, an association Bell addressed on air and that commentators still debate. His interview style, deadpan and permissive, let anything be said and let audiences judge.

Bell made few claims himself; his stated position was fascination without commitment. His contribution is infrastructural: he built the audience, vocabulary, and nightly ritual that modern UFO podcasting, YouTube culture, and even congressional-hearing viewership descend from.

Critics blamed the show for mainstreaming misinformation and for the Hale-Bopp episode's real-world harm; defenders note the fatal beliefs predated the broadcast and that Bell aired the debunking too. His abrupt retirements, family tragedies, and 2018 death (accidental overdose per the coroner) closed a life as strange as his subject matter.

Bell died in 2018. Coast to Coast AM continues under George Noory, and Bell's archived shows circulate as the culture's audio scripture.
