Michael Herrera

Michael Herrera is a former U.S. Marine who claims that during 2009 humanitarian-relief operations after the Padang earthquake in Indonesia, his six-man patrol encountered a large octagonal craft hovering low in a jungle clearing while an armed, unmarked, American-sounding force loaded weapons crates onto it, then held the Marines at gunpoint and warned them off.

Herrera's service in the Marine Corps and deployment to the Indonesia relief effort are documented; the encounter rests on his testimony and, he says, that of teammates, one of whom has partially supported elements anonymously.

Herrera went public in 2023 through the Disclosure Project's June press conference and subsequent long-form interviews (Shawn Ryan's podcast most prominently), becoming one of the Grusch era's most vivid alleged firsthand military witnesses: not craft in files, but a craft in front of him, crewed by humans, implying a private or unacknowledged human force operating recovered-style technology, potentially for trafficking-adjacent logistics, in his own speculation. He says he reported through his chain and was dismissed and threatened.

The claim's specificity (place, unit, sequence) makes it checkable in principle, and Herrera has repeated it consistently under hostile questioning. It functions in the debate as the human-hands variant of the retrieval story.

Skeptics note the absence of corroborating teammates on the record, anachronism-style oddities in details, and the account's arrival amid the whistleblower wave's incentives; military-records analysis online has disputed elements of his framing while confirming service basics. AARO has not addressed the claim publicly. It remains uncorroborated testimony carrying its own weight or none.

Herrera continues telling the account on podcasts and at disclosure events, and says he has provided details to congressional channels.
