Sean Kirkpatrick

Sean Kirkpatrick is a laser physicist and career intelligence scientist who served as the first director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) from July 2022 to December 2023. He is arguably the most prominent skeptical voice with access to the classified record, and the figure the disclosure movement most often accuses of running a debunking operation.

Kirkpatrick holds a doctorate in physics and spent decades across the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, U.S. Space Command, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, including as chief scientist at DIA's Missile and Space Intelligence Center.

As AARO's founding director he built the office's case-resolution process, testified to Congress, and oversaw the analysis behind the Historical Record Report, published in March 2024 after his departure, which concluded the government found no verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial technology or any hidden reverse engineering program, and attributed belief in such programs partly to a decades-long circular mythology. He co-authored a paper with Avi Loeb on physical constraints for UAP. Since leaving, he has written and spoken persistently against what he calls conspiracy-driven distortion of the issue, including around the 2026 PURSUE release, where he cautioned that no alien-interview document exists and attributed viral infrared videos to thermal artifacts.

His standing conclusion: most UAP cases resolve to balloons, drones, clutter, and sensor effects, a small residue lacks data rather than explanation, and whistleblower claims of craft and bodies trace to a self-referencing story community. His contribution, either way, is the first systematized government resolution process for UAP.

Grusch-aligned advocates accuse Kirkpatrick of designing AARO to reach negative conclusions and of dismissing witnesses he never interviewed; he says his teams pursued every actionable lead and found nothing verifiable, and that he and his family faced harassment for it. The dispute over his tenure defines the modern debate's institutional fault line.

Kirkpatrick works in the national laboratory and private sectors and remains among the most quoted skeptical authorities on UAP, including in coverage of the PURSUE releases.
