Skinwalker Ranch

Skinwalker Ranch is a roughly 512-acre property in the Uintah Basin of northeastern Utah, near Fort Duchesne. It is the most famous "hotspot" location in American ufology. Reported phenomena include orbs, unidentified aerial objects, cattle mutilations, and electromagnetic anomalies. The name comes from the shape-shifting witch of Navajo tradition, and the ranch sits near Ute tribal land long associated with such stories. It is the rare piece of ufology real estate that attracted actual U.S. government research money.

Terry and Gwen Sherman bought the ranch in 1994 and reported escalating strangeness: lights in the sky, unexplained cattle deaths, and objects they could not identify. Utah press coverage of their accounts in 1996 drew the attention of aerospace billionaire Robert Bigelow, who bought the property that year. Bigelow's National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) stationed scientists there for years. The 2005 book Hunt for the Skinwalker, by NIDS scientist Colm Kelleher and journalist George Knapp, made the ranch famous.

From 2008 to 2010 the ranch served as a study site for the Pentagon-funded AAWSAP program, the roughly $22 million Defense Intelligence Agency effort contracted to Bigelow's company. This is the ranch's direct connection to the government UAP story.

In 2016 Bigelow sold the property to Utah real estate executive Brandon Fugal, who was revealed as the owner in 2020. The History channel series The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch, following Fugal's team, premiered in March 2020 and has run for multiple seasons since.

The Sherman-era accounts remain the core of the lore, including the family's claim that a wolf-like animal shrugged off close-range gunfire. NIDS investigated for years and, by its own account, never captured conclusive evidence of anything anomalous. The AAWSAP era generated internal reports and later books by program insiders describing alleged phenomena, none independently verified. The television series reports ongoing anomalies, measured with instruments on camera, every season.

Privately owned by Fugal, actively monitored, and commercially successful as a media property. The ranch is not open to the public.

Three separate well-funded investigations across nearly 30 years have produced no peer-reviewed evidence of anything beyond conventional explanation. Skeptics note that the ranch's phenomena are strongest in testimony and weakest in instrument data, and that a television production has a commercial interest in continued mystery. Investigators who have worked at the ranch respond that they have recorded genuine anomalies and that the environment resists controlled study. The ownership chain, the government study contract, and the decades of witness claims are documented. The phenomena themselves remain unverified.
